In my experience, management really only gets involved in things that:
- Have an affect on the bigger picture
- Don't meet the goals of the organization
- See a negative impact on themselves or the team
As far as technical details, if your solution to your linear programming problem is defined by business needs or some other requirement - then yes, you'll need to meet them, and management will probably specifically oversee that you do. Find out what those needs are, either from your boss or from the context of your project, and try to meet them. If you can't, explain why and communicate that with your team / boss to find the correct solution to your problem.
Technical details outside of the explicit requirements of your organization or project are something your managers probably don't care about, but of course I can't speak for everyone.
