In Texas, second grade we don't read novels yet, more chapter books and bring in inferential comprehension. The Chocolate Touch isn't read until 3rd grade. Yes, then is is paired with other literature of the teachers choice. Several compare it to Kind Midas. I have even read King Midas to the students and an introductory to Chocolate Touch.
Do you read substantive books?
Do you read classical novels that can be analyzed, that require you to think? In second grade are you reading The Chocolate Touch and then comparing and contrasting it to King Midas and the Golden Touch? In sixth grade are you reading Call of the Wild by Jack London? Are you making vocabulary cards and using your new found words in essays?
