Explore the various semantic interpretations of the word “style” by selecting either Activity 1 or Activity 2 to complete.

 

Activity 1

1. Identify & discuss at least TWO different current/known semantic interpretations (i.e., definitions) of the word “style” you found interesting and provide citations for your sources (web links are fine for this). In your post, include the following components:
2. Report both semantic interpretations (i.e., definitions) and provide example of how they would be used in a sentence.
3. Why did you select the two interpretations you did (i.e., what about them were exciting or interesting to you?)
4. Identify & discuss at least one current or theoretical influence of culture, syntax, AND context (all three) on the two semantic interpretations you selected for the word “style”
5. Be sure to provide specific examples of each factor for each definition. These can be examples from your life, or examples of ways you think context, culture, or syntax may influence the semantic interpretations you selected for the word “style”

Activity 2

1. Create your own – brand new! – semantic interpretation of the word “style” (Be creative!). In your post, include the following components:

3. How or why did you choose that semantic interpretation?
4. How would you use it in a sentence? (i.e., provide an example of how to use the word “style” appropriately with the new meaning).
5. Identify at least one contextual, syntactical, AND cultural factor (all three) and explain how each factor may influence/alter your new semantic interpretation of the word “style”
6. Be sure to provide specific examples of each factor for your new semantic interpretation. These can be examples from your life, or examples of ways you think context, culture, or syntax may influence the semantics you created for the word “style”

Since this is a multi-step project, one that looks for depth of understanding of a "simple" word like "style," I would break down your question into parts.

First - it looks like you have a choice of Activity 1 or 2. Activity 1 seems more straightforward (looking up the definition in a dictionary or reference) while Activity 2 seems more creative (make it up yourself).

This choice depends entirely on what you prefer. Which would help you get this project started? Once you do that step, I feel like either project is similar.

Second - you will need an understanding of "context," "syntax" and "culture" in order to answer the second part of either activity.
