It can be helpful to write out model answers or definitions by hand a couple times while looking at your notes and then attempting to write out answers and definitions without any reference material. When you miss a definition or answer, write it several times over and try again.
If you are studying from a textbook, highlighting and writing in the margins is extremely useful. If you cannot highlight in your textbook, using post it notes or something similar to interact with the material you're trying to learn is a good way to engage in non verbal studying.
Using a website such as Quizlet can also be helpful, especially if you're more comfortable with typing versus writing by hand.
If you're suffering from headaches while studying be sure to take frequent but short breaks. Perhaps a ten minute break for every thirty minutes you spend studying. Be sure to drink lots of water and watch your posture if you're sitting at a desk. I've found that I get headaches when I'm hunched over studying but not when I'm mindful of my posture.
I hope this helps and good luck with your studying!
