World War I saw many changes to modern warfare. One of these was in air power. Dirigibles dropped bombs on battlefields. Airplanes fought dog fights in the air. Deadly mustard gas wreaked havoc. Germany in addition to these three weapon technologies. Armed tanks made their way across sites of battle. Mortars were loaded and shot from their tubes. Radios also came into limited use. Most messages were carried by bicycle messengers (such as my grandfather). Gasoline came into play as the fuel for trucks and tanks and planes. Gun turrets were designed into the bottom of larger planes.. Submarines, such as German U-boats began to rule the seas. Finally, Radar revolutionized how ships and other types of battle weapons were tracked.
