Students who work with me will improve their ability to decode a text more smoothly and fluently, whether they are typical learners or have a reading challenge. The method for doing this is to learn new phonemes, patterns, prefixes/ suffixes, syllable division, as well as spelling rules and vocabulary explicitly, systematically, and incrementally. The method is serious and also playful with engaging exercises, games, and sometimes homework to solidly teachings from one session to the next . Point systems and games help engage the young readers / writers and provide necessary practice of concepts .Sand trays and magnetic letter boards are great multi sensory tools for solidifying material taught and for when a student “blocks” on a concept . Apps can be used for study at the parent’s discretion.
The student will also improve their comprehension of the material and engage with the text In a way that allows them to generate important questions and predictions as they read; In turn, my students can use the text to make connections with their own lives —as good readers do as well as change their predictions and questions as needed.
Young students will practice proper letter formation for fluent writing and dictation and may also learn to generate topic sentences to grab the reader’s attention as well as strong paragraphs with three important points, concluding sentences, and complex, varied sentences with strong transitions. Older students will learn to make good annotations as they read, form a thesis statement and support the thesis with a five paragraph essay. I tend to use materials, symbols, and graphic organizers from “Framing Your Thoughts” through Project Read, but I also use other methodology for teaching persuasive , compare and contrast , informational , and other creative and expository writing.
