In order to reach our goals, in my opinion, we must be willing to stretch to our potential in order to gain the treasured rewards of life. Without effort, we merely exist. The quote emphasizes that a lack of effort is but a "sin", against whatever religious or non-religious criteria we hold ourselves against,. This is merely my interpretation, but I hope this helps.
