There were several examples of secret alliances during WWI which became one of the main causes of WWI. The alliances and need to prove nationalistic pride derived from the various countries becoming industrialized and taking weaker countries over for natural resources/new markets. The nationalistic movements became an inevitable result of all the stronger European countries dominating the weaker ones the only result left is for the countries nationalistic pride to lead to increased tensions to prove what country was most superior.
