Raskolnikov is deliberating what he make of his perception of injustice and evil in the world. Should he do something about it? Or should one simply do what one can to survive, and to thrive, in this world and numb oneself to the "evil" around him because that is just the state of humanity? He has been affected by the testimony of Marmeladov, through an alcoholic haze, of a world that is indeed "fallen", that man since Adam and Eve has inherited a sinful nature which leads to whatever evil exists in the world. God, however, intervened out of pure love when he sent his Son Jesus into the world. Jesus, in his sacrificial death, could do what no other human could do because he was perfect, i.e. atone for the sins of the entire world, past, present and future. And that, even for those who are in deep bondage to sin, like an alcoholic, can, if he believes and repents, be welcomed into the heavenly kingdom when their life on earth is over.
