New York City was our nation's first capital, UNTIL those wild and crazy adversarial Founding Fathers, Jefferson and Hamilton, coincidentally met on a NYC's street, and went off to the greatest "Power Lunch" in American history. Jeff = Move that capital to my "country" Virginia, you Federalist you!!! Okay, replied, Ham, IF you will agree to let the Federal Government assume ALL debt incurred from the American Revolution (this would actually enhance--not weaken, as we might surmise--the Fed's power & prestige).
Bingo!!! Washington DC was born.
