How did the ways of governing change as the southern states seceded? How were the Southern States able to secede and was it illegal?

The Civil War increased the U.S. Government's power over the states. The Civil War also unified currency. Many of the events which took place during the Civil War led to the modern government. The abolition of slavery took place, the 13th and 14th Amendements, as well as voting rights to former slaves were results of the Civil War.
