Movies with easter eggs are usually stories that were created OUTSIDE of that film. For instance.....any comic book film that has hundreds if not thousands of issues that pre and post date the story you're watching on the screen have so much mythology those "Easter Eggs" are placed to let the keen viewer know which story line this one is going to be following.
Also, movies can't always fit all their great ideas in. They only have at most 3 hours and that's just not enough time to show everyone the amazing amount of detail that has gone into every set, prop piece and character building. (Not all films are well done)
But those that are....take care to throw a nod at their audience and if you're up to speed on the story, you just might see something that only you recognize in the theater.
