They're similar! But you cannot go to Spain speaking Italian or Italy speaking Spanish and expect people to understand what you are saying. However, once you know one language (or have started to study one language,) it is much easier to learn the other one. That being said, it can be confusing to learn both of them at the same time since they are very similar! Let me know if this is helpful or if you have more specific questions.
