How to improve reading/writing skills when spoken English is good?

My friend's spoken (speak/listen) English is very good, almost as a native English speaker. However, she finds it very hard to **read** English (to the extent of taking 2-3 seconds to read simple words), as well as **write** it (having a hard time choosing the right vowel, even with everyday words).What would be a good way to improve reading/writing skills?

Encourage your friend to read more; to make it part of her everyday routine. The more she reads, the faster she will become. Also, picking the right books to match her skill level and interests.

Reading fluency can be improved by picking smaller books at the beginning so as not to make it overwhelming. After reading a particular text or book, she can write a summary on the book to improve her writing skills. She will have to practice using the right tense, proper words, punctuation, grammar etc.
