Syntax consists of a language's grammatical rules. Sometimes, you hear a person accused of using "tortured" syntax. This means that the person struggles to assemble sentences that follow the "rules." If you are assigned to write an essay, you might be admonished to use traditional syntax, that is, not to use non-standard approaches to grammar.
