Replacing the pronoun "they" with what you're actually talking about and/or...
Replacing "one thing" with what they actually have in common. For example.
A and B have one thing in common.
A and B have in common the fact that they each bear little on the velocity of an unladen swallow.
Never ever say "They got one thing in common. "Got" should almost never appear in formal writing.
