It is important to indicate whether one is talking about conducting the research or starting the writing portion, as they are two different answers complete. However, for the writing, it is important to know that a dissertation is a huge undertaking, and there needs to be a balance between getting the paper down quickly, and writing in a productive way that will help develop a more rounded, well written dissertation. The writing of a dissertation is basically considered to be a full time job when looked at the time and effort put into it, and most individuals that work on will comment that you can sleep once you are done. But realistically, if you do not have a job, then it should take up most of your day, and you could probably get it done in a decent amount of time (year or so) but if you are working and/or have other obligations, then know that it will be harder to finish as quickly.
