First of all, a thesis is at the end of a master's program, and a dissertation is at the end of a doctoral program. Also, the way the two are written and composed are different. A thesis is a combination of research and information to prove that the student has understood the topics throughout the master's program, whereas a dissertation is a time for the doctorate to provide something new to the field (either a new theory, new knowledge, or new approach), often referred to a gap in current research. Furthermore, the thesis is up to 100 pages in length (can be shorter depending on school) but the dissertation is much longer (and consists of chapters).
