Greetings! I am glad you asked! I am in the process of creating a dissertation for my doctoral degree!
1) There are 4 residencies; two of which cover the beginning stages of the program.
2) Then the last two are specifically for the dissertation preparation.
3) There is something called the Initial Review Board (IRB) where we must have the first 3 chapters of our dissertation completed upon presenting to the IRB. It might be the 3rd residency.
4) Then the last residency shall either be the presentation of the finished dissertation or the continuation of it having your advisor tell you what is wrong and right with it.
