First off, not eating enough food will cause the metabolism to slow down. Metabolism is affected by many factors such as age, gender, temperature, and your body size and composition among other factors. Metabolism essentially is the process by which which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. Even when you're body is at rest, it is still performing essential functions such as breathing, the organs are very much functioning, the blood is circulating, so and so forth. Therefore, the body is still using calories or "energy" to carry out these functions, which is essentially what metabolism is all about.
Now, aside from the metabolic rate, two other factors that are needed to assess your body's energy needs are the levels of physical activity and the factors that lead to processing the food (digestion, absorption, etc).
Factors that can impact your metabolism:
Too few calories
Skipping meals
Eating too much processed foods
Diets rich in High Fructose Corn Syrup
Diets lacking in adequate amounts of protein, iron, and other such essential nutrients
Insomnia or lack of adequate sleep habits.
