Hi Holly. A film can be both classic Hollywood and film noir. Keep in mind that the term "film noir" was created to categorize those movies with that specific style after the fact, and that they were retroactively labelled as such. It was not until decades later when critics and historians noticed the similarities and trends, that the term "film noir" came to be. Filmmakers in the mid 20th century did not seek to make their movies specifically as film noir in mind - more so, simply as dramas, for example. As a genre, film noir can stand alone, independent of classic Hollywood. There are definitely not as many nowadays, but films can and are still being made in that distinct dark style which is characteristic of film noir.
