It's important to know the differences in premise, story, plot, tone, plot points, character arcs... Tone is the controling idea that's maintained through the script or film.
Sex and the City - Tone; A contemporary female friendship story, grounded to light-hearted drama with a balance of comedic life situation. Where the characters experience the rewards and pitfalls of sex-lives in New York City. They support one another whether right or wrong.
I just made that up, that's not an official tone of the show. But it gives you a good idea where the script worlds have to stay.
