Dear Joe B.,
Start by asking yourself a simple question; what life event taught me something that anyone would benefit from knowing? Think about a few events that led you to a realization that the lesson that you learned was worthwhile. Pare the events/ideas down to their purest form. By doing this, you no longer see the assignment as purely fictional, but something that is based on reality, and universally important. This clarifies the idea.
The next step is to pick from the examples you have been given. Did it stink? Choose the skunk. Was I blind to something? Choose the kitten born with eyes closed. Was I voiceless? Choose the loon, etc. I hope this helps.
