1. Why is it possible for the surface of a pond to freeze even though the water underneath is fluid?

The density of ice is less than the density of liquid water.  Therefore, as the water freezes into ice, the ice floats on top of the liquid.  This then acts sort of as an insulator so the water underneath is harder to freeze.
