The percentage score on a test varies directly as the number of correct responses. Ted answered 44 questions correctly and earned a score of 55%. What would Ted’s percentage score have been if he had answered 68 questions correctly?

44/55 = 68/x   where “x” represents the score as a percentage if he answered 68 questions correctly

Solving that algebraically for the value of “x” yields

44x = 55(68)

x = 55(68)/44

x = 85

meaning that his score would have been 85% if he answered 68 questions correctly
