Mavis is right, I'm sure.  I'll explain why.

 

I see 2 words that I consider clues.  "After" tells me there is a cause and effect going on.  You need to think logically in that case.  Which word makes the most sense logically?

 

Also, the word "but" (after the comma) tells me there is contrast.  At the end, he is rescued.  So, before that he must have still been in the car.

 

Both ways of thinking about this question lead to the word "trapped".  I hope that helps you understand why.
