Not an organelle because it does not compartmentalize any particular subcellular processes. It serves (1) to separate the interior of the cell from the external environment, (2) to allow transport into and out of the cell by selective permeability, and (3) as a base for cytoskeletal attachment. The plasma membrane consists of phospholipids in an amphipathic bilayer configuration with proteins embedded within and associated on its surfaces. In all, it behaves as a fluid mosaic, meaning that the individual molecules that make up the plasma membrane move about relative to each other.
