Proto-Indo-European, the ancestor of Urdu and many other languages in Northern India and Pakistan, originated in the area north of the Black Sea. Urdu and its close relative Hindi began to emerge from Sanskrit (the classical literary language of India) in the 12th century. Unlike Hindi, Urdu contains more loanwords from Persian and Arabic.
