You started with 3 apples. You gave 1 apple to your friend — so if you take away 1 from 3, you have 2 apples left. Then, you bought 5 more apples. So now, you add those 5 apples to the 2 you already have.
2 apples + 5 apples = 7 apples.
So, you have 7 apples now!

3 - 1 = 4 (You subtract one because you are giving the apple to a friend.)
4 + 5 = 9 (You buy 5 more apples, so you add that to 4 you already have.)
