Learn the Fundamentals of Critical Thinking and Reading Comprehension
Hi William,
You ask an important question that many sites confront. As a journalist for several media outlets, I understand the value of both original content from the site and guest contributors. First, consider the following:
To establish your brand and audience, you need compelling content that serves your readership and their interests. Give them something they can't find elsewhere, consistently, and your audience will grow. And that's why creating your own content is important. Back links work here, too, but you have to hunt them down. Make your content engaging and necessary and strike the right tone. Also, add in some interactive components, like polls, to engage with your readers. And make sure you are tagging everything and following best practices to increase your site's ranking on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
Will the content from guest contributors be exclusive to your site, or are you planning to repost what has been published elsewhere? Make sure you are following guidelines here and always give credit to the first source of publication and use proper attribution.
Guest writers drive traffic and can boost SEO and SERP results. Using their name recognition and topic boosts marketing and attracts readers. It's important that the subject matter fits your site, makes sense with your overall content, and will resonate with your audience.
You asked about the mix of these two types of content and what might serve your site best. I believe if you create original content for 80% of your site and add 20% in guest content, that will grow your readership. Remember, you want your site to offer something no other outlet can -- or at least something a little different and beyond what similar sites offer. If your guest contributor's content is original to your site, then I'd change it to maybe 60/40 as you grow readership.
Just asking this question shows you are on the right track!
I hope that helps. Feel free to follow up if you have other questions.
Best of luck!
Jill
