I have found it useful to have some expertise as a "jack-of-all-trades" when I was first starting out. This gives you the largest pool of professional opportunities. From there. you most likely will notice that as your career advances, that scope gets smaller as you build your expertise into a few specific areas. But establishing yourself as the go-to person for a variety of different design areas (visual, photo-editing, illustrations, wireframe/prototyping, animations) is key.
To start, I made sure to reach expert level with msot of Adobe Creative Suite, plus other useful tools:
- Photoshop
- Illustrator
- InDesign
- AfterEffects
- XD
- Figma
- Data gathering tools like Crazy Egg or Microsoft Clarity
