What is the correct spelling of the word that means "to receive something" and sounds like "except," but has a different meaning? Explain the difference between this word and "except.

There are two words that sound similar but have different meanings: "accept" and "except." One means to receive or agree to something, while the other means to exclude something. The challenge is to identify which word means "to receive" and spell it correctly.

Accept is a transitive verb (a verb that requires a direct object) Accept means to allow. Example: I accept your decision. Except can be used as a preposition or a subordinating conjunction Except as a preposition (relating one word to another followed by a noun, noun phrase or wh-clause ) Except means "excluding" or "but". He enjoys all sports except (for) soccer. (multiple prepositions) Except when it is hot outside, he likes to fish (wh- clause) Except as a subordinating conjunction (links an independent clause to a dependent clause and indicates informative value of the main idea) Except means "only" or "with the exception of" I love to swim in the lake, except that the water is very cold.
