Reading is the key to good thinking and good writing!
You can start out with reading excellent mentor passages and taking down your great ideas in the brainstorming phase! I like to use model excerpts with students, so they can identify the skills they need in the sample reading and
1.) Starting in the middle of things,
2.) Use imagery to make the reader visualize,
3.) Engage the reader's senses through specific sensory language,
4.) Develop meaningful reflection to connect the storytelling to their goals and passions, and
5.) Answer the SO WHAT?
After we spend one class on three brainstorming activities, we move on to drafting the essay from a student's original vision of their story/reflection. Finally, we go through feedback and revisions to make the essay as strong as possible!
