While reading, the child becomes familiar with sounds and letters. For example, the child is assisted in writing the word fish. When the word is introduced through assisted reading, visually the child is able to see the spelling as well as understand the combination of letters to make a sound, as in s and h making a shh sound rather than being pronounced separately. The child should then be told that the plural of fish is not "fishes," but fish. Just like that, grammar, spelling, reading, and writing are introduced comfortably. Grammar and combined sounds can be difficult, which is why reading has value beyond only learning how to spell. The child thoroughly understands how to USE (write, read, speak) more words through reading.
