The play is considered a tragedy because of its themes (forbidden love, death, violence, tragic fate) and the deaths of the two title characters (Romeo and Juliet). Their families hate each other because both want political power in their town, and they are fighting each other to gain that power. As a result, Romeo and Juliet are forbidden from being together because the families want nothing to do with each other.
At the end of the play, Juliet comes up with a plan to escape and be with Romeo. She will drink a potion that makes her appear dead, then when she wakes up she will be free to be with Romeo without her parents' interference. However, Romeo doesn't know this and he sees her when she is under the potion, and thinks she is dead. He poisons himself and dies. Juliet wakes up, sees that Romeo is dead, and stabs herself with his dagger, also dying.
