"Mastering the skill." -- Implies a success. We're confident mastery has/will be achieved.
"Trying to master the skill." -- We're not sure mastery will be achieved. Maybe we doubt it.
"Learning to master the skill." -- Places focus on a long, steady process, and probably expects success by the end. (Also feels kind of redundant; I might just say 'Learning the skill.')
That's just my intuition as one English speaker. Nuances are subjective and everyone sees it a little differently.

To learn is probably the best verb, although you may also like to use "to become proficient (in something)." There is also the more slang term "to get the hang (of something)."01/12/24
