What's the difference between these sentences?

"Mastering the skill."

"Trying to master the skill."

"Learning to master the skill."

What verb is better than "learning" for someone who has the skill and is on the path toward mastering it?

To learn is probably the best verb, although you may also like to use "to become proficient (in something)." There is also the more slang term "to get the hang (of something)."
