Hi there,
I highly recommend researching the rules and situations for all these tenses. In addition, I highly recommend creating sample sentences that fit into each of these scenarios. For example, the preterite and imperfect in Spanish are both past tense. However, the difference between these two depends on the relationship with time regarding if an action was completed or it was continuous for a while without a definite beginning or end in the past. That's just a general overview, but there is more to it.
