The most common theory was so that his ideas wouldn't be easily stolen, after all he was an inventor, artist, architect, and all-around genius (Polymath). There is also the idea that he wanted to train a part of his brain to work and respond differently as he was passionate about learning about the Human condition and mind. Both are plausible answers, though, in my personal opinion, I believe he was paranoid about the copyright of his ideas.

There are a couple of established hypothesis that claim that he wrote backwards to prevent others from stealing his ideas and to prevent the Catholic Church from reading his work and getting him ex-communicated. However, if you ask me, that was not what this was about. If he truly wanted to make his notes unreadable to others, he would’ve invented an entirely new language for this purpose. We’re talking about a a genius after all. The guy who conceptualized parachutes even before helicopters were a thing. My humble opinion - but don't quote me on that, because officially it is about not having his ideas stolen OR read by the Catholic Church - is that he wanted to train a different part of his brain by writing backwards....
