Thoreau is critical of wealth and consumption, advocating simple living and leading by example. In his seminal work, Civil Disobedience, he asserts that the wealthy benefit from society's status quo, that "The rich man is always sold to the institution which makes him rich." Essentially, the wealthy have no incentive to change society and therefore are unlikely to practice civil disobedience, which may result in a loss of some of their privilege.
