In this situation, verse 2 is correct, although to our ear, it would seem that we should go with verse 1. The term "they" refers to the texts being sent (needing the auxiliary "would" in the "they'd") , and not to a person reading the texts (which is what is implied in verse 1).

Grammatically yes, but we lose some of the personification that is there by the use of they. If you use that it becomes a factual report. If you use they, it has more of an emotional impact because the texts are not just written words, but more like actual messengers bringing these ideas to you
