Compared to embryonic stem cells (ESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have two key advantages:
- Ethical issues: Since human embryos must be destroyed in order to produce ESCs, their production and use have sparked ethical controversy. iPSCs, on the other hand, may be produced from adult cells—like skin or blood cells—without harming embryos, making them a more morally acceptable choice for research and therapeutic purposes.
- immunological rejection: Because ESCs are created from donor embryos, immunological rejection may occur if they are transplanted into a different person. A patient's own cells can be used to create iPSCs, which lowers the risk of immunological rejection when they are used for transplantation or other therapeutic purposes. Additionally, this gets rid of the requirement for immunosuppressive medications, which might have harmful side effects.
