- Lie your compass on your map.
- Align the compass needle with the north on the map. (Your direction of travel arrow should be pointing in the direction of the landmark on the map.)
- Find your first landmark and lie your compass so that the corner of the baseplate touches it.
- Using the ruler on the edge of the baseplate draw a line that follows your bearing. This line can be as long as you want it.
- Repeat these steps with a second bearing.
- The point where the two lines meet is your bearing.
A service protector helps you plot and measure a bearing on a map. 0 to 180 degrees are to the left, and 180 to 360 are to the right. It also helps find distance with the help of the map.
A compass helps to find the magnetic North.
