My Translation: "He began thinking very hard about how to solve the difficult math problems."

That's a good way of paraphrasing the first part of the sentence. If you are also looking for a replacement for the second part of the sentence, you may want to say: ".... to find a solution for the tricky math tasks/ exercises".

I phrased the second part that way because i hear most people say "about" after "think/thinking." Does the way you phrase it logically entail the "about?"

No, it would be without the "about". Sorry, I should have mentioned that. The entire sentence would be "He began thinking very hard to find a solution for the tricky math tasks/ exercises". In English, you can "think about" something (to find a solution) or "think of" something or someone (your mind wonders toward it/ them).

'Thinking hard' is more than just 'thinking about'. That's why 'thinking hard' was a good expression to use here. We often say: "Think long and hard before making a decision!", which is more intense than just thinking about it. Hope that helps! Logging out for today.
