I struggled a lot in school and I know how it feels.
The difference between the two sentences is when one says you are actually doing the action (I started crying) versus you starting to do it but ending up not doing it (I started to cry).
Ex. (He started crying) when he got punched in the face.
Ex. (He started to cry) but when he got redirected to a different activity he forgot why he was going to cry.
