This is a prewriting activity for a compare and contrast essay. What you will be doing in this exercise is first look at how tv families and real families are alike, then how they are different. A venn diagram gives the student a visual representation of these ideas so that they can "see" how the information is divided. Then, this information is used to support claims when creating paragraphs that will ultimately compare and contrast the two ideas.
Venn diagrams are great for students who struggle with reading comprehension, but also I have found that they are equally useful to medical students who must differentiate between two difficult but closely related concepts. It organizes information so that the mind can synthesize it logically.
