New market was known for using 15 year olds as Confederate soldiers
Ft. Wagner was about Charleston, where the 54th was defeated, initially.
For brave African American soldiers, look at WW1 General "Black Jack" John J. Pershing's all black Buffalo Soldiers. Buffalo Soldiers served in Indian wars, the Spanish American War, the Philippines' War, WW1 and WW2. Including the Battle of San Juan Hill, where several Buffalo Soldiers earned Medals of Honor. WW1? Pershing bowed to Wilson's racism, sucking up to his commander in chief.
or also WW2's Tuskegee Airmen
or black Medal of Honor recipient Dwight Johnson in the Vietnam War. Dwight Johnson was bravest of the brave in Vietnam, saving his entire unit in unarmed hand to hand combat, surviving only because the Viet Cong's rifle jammed. Both anti-war critics & anti-military black activists & racist pro War conservatives joined in ignoring Johnson's heroism. 22 blacks won the Medal of Honor in Vietnam
Buffalo Soldiers were disbanded in 1951 for the Korean War, as Truman integrated the military. one unit did remain segregated in Korea. 2 won the Medal of Honor
1 black won the Medal of Honor in Iraq's wars
Or there's Nat Turner's slave rebellion, known as the 1831 Southhampton insurrection, where Preacher Turner and other slaves killed about 50 whites. Later they executed Turner and hundreds of blacks. After that the South required a white minister present at any black worship service.
For personal heroism, Dwight Johnson and Nat Turner probably rank highest. One died, one almost. Johnson survived the war only to be shot dead by a racist store clerk. oddly similar to Gen. Patton surviving WW2 only to die shortly thereafter in a suspicious vehicle "accident"
In the Revolutionary War, about 5,000 blacks served in the Colonial Army, including black Stacey Williams who served under General George Washington, in most of the battles, including Brandywine, and was wounded. Williams served for 6 years in the Continental Army.
why did blacks fight so bravely? all ethnic groups in war rise to the occasion and fight bravely. Blacks in Nat Turner's rebellion fought for personal freedom. Dwight Johnson had never been personally aggressive, but he was very protective of his personal family, and it came out when he became part of a military family and protected them in a very similar manner. Very aggressively.
