10+ of Making World History Relevant
This question is all about context. Let's make sure we know this context:
- Contemporary situation of African Americans
- The confederate (southern) states allowed slavery of African Americans. The economic implications of this are what lead to the Civil War.
- Emancipation Proclamation- January, 1863 this order freed all slaves in the confederacy.
- These are both battles of the American Civil War (1861 - 1865) specifically:
- Fort Wagner- July 11 and 18, 1863
- New Market - May 15, 1864
Take these facts and ask yourself-
- If there was a war and one side wanted to make you a slave and strip away all your rights, how do you think you would react?
- Would the war mean more to you since losing means at the best becoming a slave?
- If you had just been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation how would you feel about your former "owners" if you faced them in battle?
This is what the African Americans who fought for the north (union) were facing. Now answer the question using your logic. You got this!
