1. (al) -is a contraction;a + el =al "to the", "at the" I go to the park. Voy al parque.

(del)-is a contraction de + el=del "from the", "of the" I am from the South. Soy del Sur.

2A preposition is a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase. It expresses relation to another word in the clause.

Preposiitons can show direction, location, place, and spatial relationships.

The most popular mode of transportation in Peru is by bus, taxis, boats, and trains.

The best way to travel to & around Peru is by plane. This is because the distance between Peruvian cities is so wide.

It is important to know about the transportation systems in countries you're visiting because the risk of crime in Peru especially at night, alone, as a woman, or through the rural sections makes it unsafe to drive through Peru.

It is also important to know about the transportation system to inform tourists of access to markets, tourist attractions, to help reduce traffic congestion/pollution, etc. And, of course to encourage tourists to return!

To add on to the above answer, 'al' and 'del' are obligatory contractions in Spanish. Unlike English where contractions are optional (is not or isn't), in Spanish, you must contract a + el = al, and de + el = del.
