Do allergies make our immune system better?

Dear experts,

I've read articles & researches that allergies prevent infections (even more the ASTHMA).

How is that possible? Is it because they keep the Immune system active?

If im right, mast cells and baseophils secrete Histamine (The cause of itchiness), is it cause of it?

(Im talking about food allergies MAINLY)

Any clarification would be appreciated!

Thanks for replying, So in other words the more the allergies you have, the higher the chances you produce a antibody to a dissease's similar antigen (even tho there can be billions of different antigens). The odds just add up, right?
