All punctuation is critical to get your point across and meet your rhetorical objective. Inappropriate use of punctuation can alter your message. Commas, periods, semicolons and other punctuation are all important but ending a thought and starting a new one is critical to conveying meaning. Therefore, the period is most crucial or the "biggest deal" and could be used alone effectively without any other punctuation. No other punctuation could be used alone in piece of writing.
